Image and VR part 2

I decided I would give this second project a looking at. Ive now actually started modeling for it. Ive decided to make a model of cargo east at East Midlands Airport as I work there and feel that staff, especially new starters, would benefit from seeing how operations work. I will go into more details later.
here are a few initial models of a aircraft pushback tug.

Image Essay

a few things I've noticed that are wrong with my printouts but I will have to make do! just waiting for the glue to dry but its looking good! I used a craft knife to cut the edges however they are looking very rough and frayed. If I were to get these made in quantity I would have let the printers cut them out.

print shop fun!

got my image essay printed out! looks good! and so it should for £15. just need to construct it now. I took my postcard in to get printed too however the grey I used was far too dark and doesn't show up on the printed copy. Im just playing with it now to get it to show up better.

The image on the postcard was drawn in flash then exported to photoshop. Its a very simple idea but I love simplicity. I think it works really well.

Image Essay

Right, it 2.30 am and I'm working on this damn image essay. It doesn't have to be in for a week but I decided that getting it done now is the best option seeing as I will more than likely mess up the printing of it. So far tonight I have completed the final images for the book and also began the book cover designs.

All of the images I used in my book have been in some way or form edited by myself in photoshop. I have tried as hard as possible to use my own images that I have taken. I believe there are only two (the plane and George Bush) that were sauced from elsewhere.
In each image there are multiple layers on top of each other blended together. I have also been experimenting with custom brushes which bring a lot of texture to the images.

The layout of the book has been very challenging and I have been updating my design for it constantly.

Nearly completed all of my images. I'm still trying to work out the layout of the book and the logistics of printing it all out.

Image Essay Book design

Im looking into a variety of ways to present my images as a book. I found a company who make fancy cards and promotional material called Whitney Woods where I am trying to get hold of some samples so I can understand how to construct similar items. I like the look of the "Flicker Book" but I am unsure as to whether it will contain all ten images.

This is a really tactile product - you just can't put it down. Unfortunately our photos fail to portray what it's about and you are much better off asking for a sample! It's a "DL" sized book that contains 5 cards which flick over when you pull a tab. Remember those little books where you quickly flicked the bottom right hand corner and a cartoon started to move? Well it's sort of like that!.

Image Essay picture two

Decided to work on a second image today. This image is suppost to represent the puppets in the cave. How they are controlled by other people and projected into the prisoners lives. Im still unsure as to how I will arrange these images into some kind of a book and Im worried that these images are a bit too small for print but I will cross that bridge when I come to it. Enjoy.

Image Essay picture one

right, I've been working on this image for a few hours tonight. Not 100% happy at the moment but im sure after a bit of tweeking it should be ok. Not sure on how im going to format my book to hold all the images. I went to the library to get out a book on paper engeneering but all three had been taken out just before.

Image Essay

Ive just started to look at the text to make my image essay from. Ive decided to use the peice of text from the book The Republic. The peice is called "The Allegory of the cave" written by Plato.

Plot Summary for
Allegory of the Cave

Deep inside a cave a group of prisoners are chained to a wall since their childhood. Not only are their limbs immobilized by the chains but their heads are also chained so that their eyes are fixed on a wall and can only see the shadows that are projected in front of them. These shadows are what they believe is the truth. Then one of the prisoners escapes the darkness of the cave into the light of a new world and realizes that the truth lies beyond his chains. However, when he returns to the cave to free his peers with his new found truth, the other prisoners refuse to believe him.

After reading the story and browsing the net I have begun to get quite interested in this allegory. In the most simple terms Plato is talking about waking up to the truth of reality about us. He is questioning the very nature of reality. The Allegory presents, in brief form, most of Plato's major philosophical assumptions: his belief that the world revealed by our senses is not the real world but only a poor copy of it, and that the real world can only be apprehended intellectually; his idea that knowledge cannot be transferred from teacher to student, but rather that education consists in directing student's minds toward what is real and important and allowing them to apprehend it for themselves; his faith that the universe ultimately is good; his conviction that enlightened individuals have an obligation to the rest of society, and that a good society must be one in which the truly wise (the Philosopher-King) are the rulers.

I also found great parallels to the movie "The Matrix"

the website bellow points out many of the connections between the two.

VR headset and R/C plane

"A Canadian RC airplane enthusiast shows us some sweet unanticipated convergence between a model RC airplane and virtual reality gear. It works like this: The airplane is a conventional one, controlled by a wireless remote control. On the airplane is a pan-and-tilt camera, controlled also wirelessly. Here's the cool part. The video is viewable through virtual reality goggles, which have a gyroscope built in to sense the movement of the goggles. When the wearer moves his head, the camera moves. Tragically, this is not a product you can buy, but a DIY project."

D&AD Global Student Awards

I have to pick a task to do from the long list of breifs. Im still not 100% sure but I think I would enjoy designing a post card for "Don't Panic"

Ive just been looking on there and they also have a poster competion on. Create an A2 poster with the theme of fear. Im going to have a think about it over the next day or so.
