Site Specific

We were given the task to find 5 site-specific designs and post them with a small explanation on our blogs. To be honest I wasn’t too sure what site specific meant so here is a definition I found for everyone’s benefit.

"Art or design that is conceived and produced for a particular location or environment. The meaning of site-specific work is often closely related to the place in which it is situated. Political, social or geographical aspects are taken into consideration and are intended by the artist to frame the viewers experience and interpretation of the work.” The 20th century art book PHAIDON

Often working with large life sized stencils; Banksy produces his secret works in the middle of the night while the majority of people are sleeping. Banksy's stencils are often site-specific and feature a wide range of striking and humorous images occasionally combined with slogans. The overall message is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist, anti-establishment or pro-freedom.

Using the sign that was already there, Banksy adds a bit of excitement to it.
