Design COURSEWORK stage 1

INTERACTIVE DESIGN RESEARCH ESSAY

Background
As a designer you will need to appreciate the interplay between form and function within the work that you create. The philosophy developed in the Bauhaus school of Art & Design was that “Form follows Function” (See quote from Walter Gropius and Bauhaus design criteria on the VLP).

Research Assignment
Design an interactive essay investigating/exploring the notions of form and function in the design of a ‘system in the city’. This can be any designed system, created for any purpose. (Ask me if in any doubt). The assignment should ‘read’ like a ‘non-linear’ magazine article, for an academic audience, must be an in depth exploration of the subject, and demonstrate appropriate research). Harvard referencing should be used, for text and images, where appropriate.

You may want to use a design & mood boards or map out how your design will work. (Photograph these and keep records of the process in your online journal). These will be looked at and formative feedback given.

The way the “essay” functions should illustrate the interplay between form & function. It is expected that the packaging and labelling of the disc will be part of the overall design.

The piece will be assessed according to the thoroughness of the research content and the creativity in the design (both of function and style).

To be submitted on DVD.
